# Ubuntu Touch

The convergent alternative operating system

It’s becoming increasingly clear that to ensure our freedom in mobile computing, we need alternatives to the common offerings from big tech companies designed to serve their own interests, allowing us to maintain control over our own devices and how our technology functions.

Ubuntu Touch is the alternative initially created by Canonical (the corporate sponsor of Ubuntu) and is now developed and maintained by the UBports community.

The UBports community aims to bring Ubuntu Touch to more people, making it sustainably available on more devices, and creating a different system with an innovative paradigm—convergence—to reduce the barriers to using personal computing in different contexts (mobile and desktop).

Next Thursday, the 27th, come learn about Ubuntu Touch and its ecosystem at the Porto Innovation Hub, and on Saturday the 29th, come learn the basics of Ubuntu Touch application development, as well as a workshop introducing the development of Ubuntu Touch ports for new devices, at LCD - Porto.

For the Saturday workshop on the 29th, we recommend bringing a computer, ideally with Linux installed, and a willingness to learn.
